Steve Steigerwald and Steigerwalds Kitchens & Baths have always
had one goal in mind
to build the highest quality cabinets anywhere. Over the past 21
years one of his biggest dreams came true. At the end of 1998, Steigerwalds were
very pleased to present the addition of a CNC Router. Steve and his wife Mindy traveled
to Atlanta, GA in early 98 to the International Woodworking and Machine Show, to see first
hand all the newest technology and machines available on the market. "It was a huge
investment, the largest amount I can ever imagine spending on a single piece of
equipment". The Steigerwalds felt that this step is necessary to bring Steigerwald
Kitchens & Baths into the 21st Century.
The Anderson Stratos Router speeds production up by completing much of the mundane
cutting and routing necessary in the early stages of the cabinet building process. Steve
and his craftsmen had been depending on a custom cabinet computer system called Cabinet
Vision. While allowing Steve to design cabinets and simultaneously providing the cut
lists, the information still had to be interpreted by humans.
The state-of-the-art CNC operates with a stand-alone computer that interprets the cut
list and while doing the cutting and routing. The CNC does require an AlphaCam
"post-processor".
Now, the Cabinet Vision program provides CAD (computer aided design) information, and
this is sent to AlphaCam (computer aided machining). Alpha Cam interprets the CAD
information and puts it into language the Router can understand. The Router assigns tool
paths and put the steps together to make the process the most efficient. The CNC has a
4 x 8 worktable and holds the material down with a vacuum. It will even lay
out the raw material to eliminate the most waste. The CNC holds up to 7 tools at one time,
has a 10-hp motor and achieves 10,000 RPM.
The CNC also allows Steve to go after new and different business. "We hope to keep
the machine running all day long", he says. "Our own work will come first, but
we hope to job out the other time." Small parts can be cut out in seconds instead of
minutes-anything from plastic to aluminum. Raw materials could be dropped off and the
pieces picked up ready to go in days. Steve and Mindy have been actively advertising these
new capabilities, and hope to increase this side of the business. "There are all
kinds of non wood-working related business that could benefit from our machine."
